There are many sport centres in Tyumen which host competitions of different levels, from international to local events.
President Vladimir Putin attended the opening ceremony of Tyumen Judo, one of the sporting centres.
The Tyumen Region takes the third place among all the subjects of the Russian Federation. A lot of factors influence the rating: total number of sportsmen, number of sporting facilities, their accessibility to disabled people, etc. In 2013 the government invested in development of sport infrastructure. As a result, new sporting facilities have been built and the number of sporting sections and sportsmen has increased.
Results of professional sportsmen who train at the new facilities are improving. In 2013 Tyumen sportsmen won close to 1500 medals in national and international competitions. The number of Tyumen citizens in national teams has increased as well.
Now about 300 Tyumen sportsmen represent their country in international competitions in different kinds of sports. Among them is Evgeny Garanichev, the bronze medalist of the Sochi Olympics, Elena Gook, three-time world champion in body fitness in the open-weight category, and Vera, the dance group, multiple formation champion in international tournaments.
Major competitions, such as the following, are held here regularly.
More than 148 thousand people in the region are volunteers. They take active part in organizing sporting events in the region and outside of it. Volunteers taking part in international competitions must be highly qualified in the areas of professionalism, work experience, foreign languages, and personal qualities. At the World Student Games in Kazan there were 150 Tyumen volunteers, and in Sochi, a similar number of Tyumen volunteers provided assistance of the Olympics.
A system of physical, educational and health activities for people in their yards and sporting facilities nearby is built nowhere in Russia but in the Tyumen region. Trainings take place at schools and playgrounds in the yards.
The number of participants of the regional tournaments Golden Puck, Leather Ball, White Boat and others is increasing every year. The regional competition Sporty Family is getting more and more popular. More than 9000 public sporting events are held annually in the city, in the region, and among the Russian and international regions. The events include rural games, Spartakiades (educational institutions, work collectives and sports masters), Paralympic Games, sport competitions, sporting holidays and Health Days.
